Since December 2012, the mother-daughter team of Kelly Childs and Erinn Weatherbie has been winning the hearts and taste buds of visitors from Burlington and beyond (as well as winning numerous awards!), by offering a delicious assortment of good-for-you cupcakes, brownies, cookies, ice cream and more, highlighted by refreshingly friendly service.
From the adorable storefront, to the sweet aromas as you step inside, to the sound of happy voices choosing cupcakes, to the rows and rows of beautiful baked goods, until the moment you take your first bite, Kelly’s is a feast for your senses. The staff is happy to make suggestions if you just can’t make up your mind. And truly, deciding on just one treat is almost impossible.
I brought home a box of treats from Kelly’s on the long weekend, much to the excitement of my family. I carefully cut each item into smaller pieces, so we could all sample everything. I was able to snap some photos before everything was
inhaled eaten, with the exception of the Chocolate Sunbutter Donut, which only made it a few blocks up Brant Street before it disappeared. If you didn’t think healthy could equal delicious, this donut just might change your mind. It blew mine! (Thanks for the recommendation, Jess!)
Because a picture is worth a thousand words, here are a few to make your mouth water.
Yes, that is a donut perched on top of a cupcake and it’s every bit as delicious as it looks! The Coffee Break cupcake combines a chocolate mocha cupcake with vanilla espresso buttercream and is topped with a cinnamon sugar donut. It’s ridiculously good and my favourite treat of the day. Even my kids loved the subtle espresso flavour. It would go perfectly with a cup of Balzac’s Coffee from Kelly’s. The fact that something this yummy is also made from healthy ingredients is a reason to enjoy this cupcake even more.
A red velvet cupcake made without unhealthy food colouring? You’ll find it at Kelly’s! The secret to the pretty red colour in these cupcakes is beet juice, although you don’t even have to like beets to love these cupcakes. The cupcake is topped with a dairy-free buttercream and the overall effect is an elegant cupcake with just the right amount of sweetness.
Sweet, cinnamon-y and chewy, Kelly’s Snickerdoodles are proof that a classic cookie can be re-invented – the result is a gluten-free vegan cookie bursting with home-baked taste. Delish!
This cookie is jam-packed with wholesome ingredients including pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, chocolate chips, raisins, cranberries and oats. I could easily enjoy one of these as a mid-morning snack or afternoon pick-me-up (or really any time of the day). I loved the nutty, hearty texture of this cookie.
The #1 selling bakery item at Kelly’s, the Mile High Brownie is an award-winning, mouthwatering feast for the eyes. But you won’t want to stare at it for too long, because this rich, gooey, fudge brownie (did I mention healthy?), topped with chocolate frosting, vanilla buttercream, more brownies, chocolate ganache and homemade caramel sauce will be begging you to eat it. It’s impossible to resist, and was a family favourite at my house.
A visit to Downtown Burlington just isn’t complete without a stop at Kelly’s Bake Shoppe. If you stop in during the month of August, you’ll also have the chance to try the limited-time Root Beer Float Cupcake – sounds like the perfect way to celebrate summer!
