It’s no secret and no surprise that Burlington is consistently listed at or near the top of Money Sense Magazine‘s lists of Canada’s Best Places to Live over the past few years. This year, we were ranked as the #1 mid-size city in Canada and the #5 overall. That’s definitely something to brag about (but we probably won’t, because we’re pretty humble here in Burlington, no?)
Sure we’ve got low crime, good access to medical care, low unemployment and generally great weather. But there’s much more to Burlington than these factors. So whether you’re new to Burlington, have been around awhile, are thinking of coming back, or are just visiting, here are the top 5 reasons to LOVE this amazing city of Burlington!
We’ve got them all! Some of the biggest festivals in the country take place right here in Burlington: Sound of Music Festival, Burlington Beer Festival, the Children’s Festival, Marques d’Elegance and Ribfest. We’ve even got a Kite Festival and the Joseph Brant Festival! Our beautiful waterfront plays host to most of these festivals, where thousands of residents and visitors celebrate fabulous music, food, drink, cars and more. A few benefits of these festivals, you ask? Lots of money spent in our city, many opportunities to volunteer, no shortage of entertainment and a chance to show Burlington off to those who don’t yet know how great this city is!
When you want to do some exploring a little further from home, you’ll find that Burlington is a stone’s throw from just about everywhere! Need some big-city excitement? How about escaping to cottage country? What about visiting some fabulous wineries, hitting the ski slopes or doing some cross-border shopping? It’s all in our (very large) backyard.
Often it’s the intangibles that make a city so great. In Burlington, our neighbourhoods and communities are safe, vibrant, involved and welcoming places to live. But it’s much more than just an absence of crime. It’s neighbours helping neighbours; Friday night volunteer-run community dinners; residents lining the streets to cheer on racers in sporting events; kids setting up lemonade stands and bake sales to help support someone who really needs it; a coffee paid for in the drive-thru by the car in front of you. It’s a city of people who are proud to live in Burlington and who keep striving, in big ways and small, to make Burlington the best it can be. You might even say that Burlington oozes community spirit.
When you want to escape to nature, there is so much diversity surrounding Burlington. Provincial parks, conservation areas, hiking in the escarpment, beaches, the Royal Botanical Gardens, nature walks at Paletta Mansion – what are you waiting for? Even our neighbourhoods are beautiful! Get out and explore!
Burlington’s downtown has become a real destination and continues to grow. Our waterfront is spectacular, whether you’re going for an early morning run, an evening stroll along the pier, or something in between. Shopping, dining (with too many great restaurants to name), the arts, recreation, festivals – it’s all downtown. And if you’ve never wandered through Village Square, you really should.
