WEEKEND EVENTS IN BURLINGTON: JUNE 9 –11, 2017

Ahhh the summer music festival. A moment in time when you can let your hair down and throw on that old band t-shirt, no matter who you are (or what year it’s from). It’s okay. No judgement. We love it because, truly, this is how we should always feel.

There is something collectively human and spiritually freeing about these events. I think it’s just because it’s about being outside, and the only thing you have to do is to take it all in…and enjoy.

Here comes the Sound of Music Festival.

And as a fan and self-proclaimed expert on the event, I am going to break it down for you in the easiest terms, so that you might enjoy the festival to the fullest.

Saturday June 10th: The Kick-off Concert (this is a ticketed event). This day will cost you but with big names like the Offspring, Live, Marianas Trench, Spin Doctors, Killer Dwarfs and Sumo Cyco, the $70 price tag is more than fair. ($90 at the gate). This is the only day of shows that will cost you if you choose to go. It is a paid event that helps to fund and ensure that the rest of the festival is brought to you free of charge.

Sunday June 11th : Our Sound of Music friends have added a bonus day here: Canada 150 Celebration Day! FREE concerts, citizenship ceremony, reaffirmation ceremony, and more free concerts!

Sunday June 11th-Wednesday June 14th : is the Club Series. See over 30 bands at our local bars.

Thursday June 15th -Sunday June 18th : Free concerts resume in the park.

Friday June 16th: Silver Series (12-3pm): “Timeless” music for the silver haired generation.

Friday June 16th -Sunday June 18th: Downtown Streetfest. Bands playing al fresco on Brant @ Maria St, Ontario St, Elgin St and Pine St. Also, other fun activities and amusement can be found in the downtown core (yoga, Jenga, dance and more…).

Family Fun Zone: Saturday June 17th  & Sunday June 18th: Located just west of the entrance. Kids’ shows and entertainment.

TD Stage: Main Stage. This is where your headliners will be. (save me a spot).

OLG Stage: (far end of the park, past Spencer’s): This is the 2nd largest stage, and if you are looking for country music, they will likely be playing here. (It is not exclusively a country stage…please check the listings).

Cogeco Stage: Located in front of city hall. If you are looking for jazz, blues, folk, etc. you are likely to find them here.

Hyundai Stage: Located behind the Waterfront Hotel: Here’s where to go to check out the new/up and coming bands, and a few old favourites….and a foam party.

Parade: Saturday, June 17th, 10:30am-1pm (begins at Central Park, along Caroline to Pearl, to James, north on Brant to Central High School).

Parking: Going to be tough. Take the shuttle instead ($3 per person, pick up at Burlington Go Station), or ride your bike and park at the bike corral for $2 near the Waterfront Hotel.

And that’s it! Bring a water bottle, slap on the sunscreen, stretch out your devil horn fingers and enjoy the festival! There really is something for everyone!
